While neoliberal forms of economic development are failing almost universally, Community Wealth Building has rapidly expanded as a powerfully demonstrated and democratic alternative. This action-focused podcast looks at immediately replicable practices for building community wealth. Interviews feature leading practitioners across Canada, as well as international examples that can quickly be integrated into the Canadian landscape. Season 1 covers: Procurement, Community Land Trusts, Worker Cooperatives, Social Acquisition & the “Silver Tsunami” of Retiring Entrepreneurs, Community Bonds, and Local Currencies. Ultimately, we’ll learn how to join the movement building a democratic economy from the ground up.

In 2018, the Legacy Leadership Lab (L3) estimated an astonishing 700,000 small Canadian businesses risked closure due to insufficient succession planning. Dr. Sean Geobey explains the different forms of Social Acquisition that can use a “community wealth building focus” to save companies, jobs, and expand the legacy of these enterprises in their community. Dr. Geobey is the Co-Director of the Waterloo Institute for Social Innovation and Resilience, and served as Principal Investigator for L3.
